Manchester Indoor Softball returns with record number of teams

Fri 4 Oct 2019

The Manchester Indoor Softball League embarked on its 12th season on Tuesday 1 October. With the largest-ever number of participating teams at 19, the two divisions will compete every Tuesday night from 7.00-9.00 pm at Fives Trafford in Greater Manchester. Teams play super-quick six-minute innings, and each game is just one inning long.  Players face just one pitch per at-bat, making for a very fast-paced cardio workout. The games are played at the indoor soccerdome on 5-a-side football pitches where the league takes over six pitches for the evening. Four new teams will be welcomed this season: All-Stars in Division 1 and Swingers, Batsh!tcrazy and Ace of Base in Division 2.

All-Stars are a mix of players from Division 1 teams in the Manchester Softball League, set up by Greensox player Nathan Barratt. In true All-Star style, the team all wear the kit of their outdoor team. Swingers are playing their debut indoor season following their first season in the Manchester Softball League this past summer. Batsh!tcrazy were formed by Shawn and Diane Khwaja, who wanted to give members of their cricket club a winter sport, and are made up of male and female cricketers from Lymm Oughtrington Park Cricket Club who had never played softball until this week! Ace of Base were formed following rookie sessions in the summer and consist of a mix of players, including two 14-year-olds who began playing age 10 at junior baseball/softball sessions in Trafford funded and run by BaseballSoftballUK.

These teams’ rookie status will give them an early advantage, with all rookie players earning two runs each time they cross the plate sporting the Manchester Indoor Softball League’s infamous luminous yellow rookie bands.

Linni Mitchell, BaseballSoftballUK North West Coach commented, “It’s great to have so many new teams joining the league this season, and especially exciting for me to see junior players progressing into the adult league! If someone had told me in October 2015 that two of the kids from the first juniors session would be playing in the indoor league as soon as they hit 14 I’d have been chuffed to bits, and exactly four years later they have and I certainly am!”

Luis Arrevillagas, BSUK North West Regional Development Manager said, “We love to see the Manchester Indoor Softball League growing in popularity year on year. We want to say a big thanks to the Manchester Softball League who provide support to the league, funding the rookies' sessions. These sessions always attract new players who eventually join teams in the summer season. The Fives Trafford staff have also been really supportive of the league, and this season they’ll be handing out vouchers for a free pint to the male and female at the top of the home run table for each division on a weekly basis, as well as providing post-match food which the players absolutely love.”

BaseballSoftballUK's North West development team will also be running two indoor tournaments next month: a Single-Sex Tournament on 2 November and an Autumn Season Tournament on 30 November. Places are limited, so please contact for information about how to enter your teams.
