Tue 9 Aug 2011

Torbay Barons logoThe newest member of the British baseball community is the Torbay Barons Baseball Club, who are up and running at their new home at Clennon Valley Playing Fields in Paignton, Devon thanks to a grant from Sport England.

The club will focus on providing a community hub for the sport of baseball and in spring 2012, with the support of BaseballSoftballUK, will reach out to local colleges, universities, schools, and businesses to encourage more participants in the area into the sport.

The Sport England grant funding, announced during the first week of August, will be used mainly to purchase of new equipment and uniforms to develop the club.

A delighted Laurence Smith, Club Manager of the Barons, said: "The grant will now enable us to grow and develop and give us the opportunity to visit schools and colleges to provide taster sessions in an effort to attract new members and to promote baseball in this part of the country."

Recruitment drive

First up for the Barons will be a recruitment drive to encourage new members of all abilities to join the club, followed by some planned friendly games later this summer before an off-season of more recruitment. By next year, the aim is to have a team that can compete in one of the British Baseball Federation senior leagues.
