Manchester baseball/softball junior sessions re-launch for the autumn

Sat 6 Oct 2018

BaseballSoftballUK junior baseball/softball sessions are coming back for the autumn season in Manchester, starting on Sunday 7 October on Pitch 5 at Powerleague Trafford and running on Sunday afternoons from 2.00-3.00 pm through to December.

Sessions are not exclusive to Trafford residents, with children welcome from all Greater Manchester boroughs and beyond.

The age range of the sessions has been extended, and coaching is now being offered up to age of 14.  This will allow juniors to transfer to adult sessions and leagues once they have reached that age and gained the necessary skills.

It also means that promising and talented juniors aged 12 and 13 can play with their slightly older peers on a weekly basis for another couple of years.

Those who sign up for the junior sessions in Manchester can also look forward to BSUK Academy sessions that will be held for baseball and softball players in the North and the Midlands during the 2018-19 off-season.

Guest coaches

Guest coaches have been lined up to come along to Manchester junior sessions during the autumn.

One of the guest coaches will be GB Men’s Fastpitch Team catcher Nathan Barratt, who will lead a catching clinic.  Another will be Emma Agostini, who grew up in the USA, played for 17 years and has coached since the age of 16.  Emma will join some of the sessions to share her expertise on infield positions.

Introducing specialist coaches for specific positions should provide the junior players who attend the sessions with the chance to try out and learn new positions.

Batting cages

Manchester is home to the North's only baseball batting cages, and these will be open to the juniors players on Sundays.

The Ripper Nippers, in particular, are looking forward to getting in the cages for a bit of fun with coaches and parents to help achieve that all-important team bonding.

Trafford Primary Baseball/Softball League

During the summer term in 2018, Flixton Junior School played their inaugural competitive baseball/softball game against neighbours English Martyrs Primary School (you can read more about this here).

After seeing the game publicised on social media, local school Urmston Primary wanted in on the action and have booked baseball/softball coaching in PE lessons with both of their Year 5 classes for the autumn term.

In 2019, the plan is to create a Trafford Primary League featuring Flixton Juniors, English Martyrs and Urmston Primary.  Teams will play a mini-tournament at least twice during the school year to show off the skills learned in PE lessons, and after-school clubs will be held during the summer term.
