London Indoor League wraps up successful season

Wed 3 Apr 2019

BaseballSoftballUK’s London Indoor Softball League wrapped up a successful season on Saturday 30 March at the Osterley Sports and Athletic Centre in Isleworth, West London, with titles going to Douche Canoe (pictured below) in the Comp Division and Knights in the Rec Division.

Douche Canoe took the Comp title for the first time, taking over the honours from incumbents Blue Steel, in a three-way duel which included MI6 Inside Agents (shown below).

By contrast, Knights (below) had a commanding lead over second-place Meteors by the end of the Rec Division season.

The league provides a great way for players to keep fit and keep their batting eye sharp over the off-season, and a total of 15 teams took part over the course of the 2018-2019 autumn and spring sessions.

Standings

The final standings for the spring session, which ran from late January to the end of March, were:

COMP DIVISION
1 – Douche Canoe
2 – MI6 Inside Agents
3 – Blue Steel
4 – W13
5 – Diamonds
6 – Designated Drinkers

REC DIVISION
1 – Knights
2 – Meteors
3 – Rec Scratch Team
4 – Pork and Pitchers
5 – Diamond Dogs

Dave House, captain of the Designated Drinkers (pictured above), the team that earned the ‘Best Team Effort’ award in the Comp Division, nevertheless made it clear that his team had really enjoyed the experience.

“Although often over-matched on the field,” Dave said, “our spirit, energy and enthusiasm were rarely exceeded in the Spring 2019 season. Our motivation for playing is to mostly keep our skills sharp during the off-season.  The larger courts at Osterley and the friendly environment and camaraderie amongst the teams provide the perfect environment for us and we’ll be looking forward to next year.”

The ‘Best Team Effort’ award in the Rec Division went to Diamond Dogs (shown below).

Next time

The London Indoor Softball League is booked to provisionally return to Osterley for the 2019-2020 season, although other, more central venues are being investigated.

If any player proposes a suitable venue that BSUK ends up booking for next year, their team will receive one free session.  The venue needs to have at least two suitably-sized courts (one court = approximately four badminton courts) and decent public transport links.

If the league does remain at Osterley for next season, the dates will be:

COMP DIVISION:
2019:
  19 October, 2, 16 and 30 November, 14 December
2020:  25 January, 8 and 22 February, 7 and 21 March

REC DIVISION:
2019:
  12 and 26 October, 9 and 23 November, 7 December
2020:  18 January, 1, 15 and 29 February, 14 March
