Yorkshire Dales win North West Series 2 Rec Tourney

Tue 2 Jul 2019

On Saturday 29 June, the hottest day of 2019, seven Rec teams battled it out in Manchester at the second 2019 North West Series Rec Tournament, with Yorkshire Dales taking the top spot after losing just once during the day.

These northern teams are more used to playing in torrential rain, but performed well in temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius.

Teams played every other team in a full round-robin, and were then placed into gold, silver and bronze finals while the seventh-placed team from the round-robin got an early chance to get out of the sun.

The final results were:

Gold Winner -- Yorkshire Dales
Gold Runner-up -- Base Invaders
Silver Winner -- Leeds Bobcats
Silver Runner-up -- Tiggers
Bronze Winner -- Thunder II
Bronze Runner-up -- Freeze
Seventh Place -- Stingers

New format

Following the success of a trial of back-to-back fixtures at the Comp Tournament at North West Series 1, organisers tested it again at this tournament and received fantastic feedback.

Players rested just once during the round-robin, leaving some teams with six games on the bounce, with a 15-minute break after every two games for all teams.  Even in the 30+ degree heat, this seemed to suit the players, who were happy not to have to rest an hour between each game.

BaseballSoftballUK North West Coach Linni Mitchell said, “We wanted to try something new, but my initial thought was that it worked well at NWS1 because it was a cold day and teams didn’t have to warm up between each game as they never properly cooled down.  This time, there was no chance of cooling down on or off the field, but regardless of weather the new format went down really well with the players, so we will definitely look at making it a regular fixture at the North West Series in future.”

Luis Arrevillagas, BSUK’s Regional Development Manager, said, “I feel like we’ve invented something really cool with this new formatting for tournament fixtures.  We strive to make our tournament the best, and players love playing six or seven games in one day -- it is fantastic value for money!  Also, the minimal stopping and starting leaves less chance for injuries as everyone’s muscles are staying warm through the day. I’m really happy to hear the positive feedback from the teams about the scheduling.”

The raffle remained a popular element at the tournament, with North West Series sunglasses as giveaways for all entrants – and very much needed on such a sunny day!

Organisers also had North West Series T-shirts on sale, with all money going back into the running of the tournaments.
