Sat 6 Jul 2019

Sunday 6 July -- The UK’s South East Senior (U17) Little League All-Star Team finished in fourth place this past week at the Europe/Africa Senior Qualifier, played in Navarro, Italy from 1-5 July.

The UK Team had qualified for this tournament at the UK Little League Qualifier, organised by BaseballSoftballUK at Farnham Park on the weekend of 8-9 June

The five-team tournament featured teams from the Netherlands, Italy, Belgium and the Czech Republic as well as the UK, and a full round-robin was played followed by a final to determine the team that will play in the Senior Little League World Series from 27 July-3 August in the United States.

UK Team scores

Scores of the UK Team’s games were:

Czech Republic 12, UK 1
Italy 12, UK 1
UK 7, Belgium 6
Netherlands 8, UK 2

The game against the Netherlands was close until the last inning, when a strong Dutch team pulled away from a very young UK team.

Mikio Nakazawa, Head Coach of the UK Team, said, “Our team had a diversity of players from the UK, the US and Japan, but there was a great team spirit.  Everyone played fair and hard until the very last inning.  I am very proud of the outcome.

“I am really grateful to the volunteers, the Little League organisation, BSUK and all the clubs and parents who did so much to make this a great experience for the players,” Mikio added.  “They will carry this memory for the rest of their life.”

The final round-robin standings were:

Italy (4-0)
Netherlands (3-1)
Czech Republic (2-2)
UK (1-3)
Belgium (0-4)

Italy and the Netherlands then played each other on 5 July to decide the team that would represent Europe and Africa in the United States.
