Successful HTP event attracts four new teams in Northampton

Wed 14 Jun 2017

A Hit the Pitch slowpitch softball evening held at Crispin Park, the home of Northampton Baseball Club, on Tuesday 13 June attracted four new teams from local companies to the sport.

The event was planned to coincide with the club’s new open softball sessions, and was managed by BaseballSoftballUK and the Northamptonshire Sports Partnership.  It was promoted through the local CSP’s Workplace Challenge programme.

The aim of the event was to promote the local club and BSUK’s Hit the Pitch Workplace Softball Programme to local businesses.

Coaching and competition

The four companies that attended were Barclaycard, Huxlow Science College, RML Group and a staff team from Northamptonshire Sport.

Each team was made up of company staff members plus a couple of Northampton Baseball Club members who helped organise and coach the teams and got to know the players in a bid to recruit them!

The session started at 6.00 pm with some basic coaching before moving on to a three-team round-robin competition umpired by BSUK’s Midlands Development Manager Leah Holmes.

Adapted rules were used to give players the best possible experience given the short time they had been exposed to the game, such as batting through the order and three strikes before hitting off a tee.

Music and drinks were available, which made for a relaxed atmosphere.

Huxlow Science College were the competition winners, followed by Barclaycard and the RML Group.  All the teams were presented with medals by Northamptonshire Sport.

Looking ahead

There are now plans in hand to run another competition at the end of the summer.

Any Midlands companies looking to hold a Hit the Pitch evening can get in touch with Leah Holmes ( for a quote.
