Mavericks and Basehunters take Manchester Indoor Autumn trophies

Tue 18 Dec 2018

The final games in the Manchester Indoor Softball League’s Autumn 2018 season were completed on 5 December, with the Mavericks taking the Division 1 trophy and Basehunters winning in Division 2.

The league, which began in October and is currently in its fifth year and 10th season, was opened up to two divisions this year, each with eight teams.

Mavericks are one of just three teams who played in the inaugural season in January 2014 and are the only team to have competed in all 10 seasons.  They have taken the top spot seven times.

The Basehunters joined the league in the autumn of 2015.

Mavericks lost just two games during the autumn season while scoring the most runs and conceded the fewest, proving that they were deserving winners.  They also did the double, winning the Division 1 Cup as well as the league.

In Division 2, the University of Manchester Maelstrom took home the Cup after placing second in the league behind the Basehunters.

At the end-of-season awards ceremony, Aleck Aspinall and Olly Medley shared the men’s Division 2 home run trophy, while Alyssa Jones, Emma Agostini and Tereza Kokocinska were joint top of the Division 2 women’s home run leader board.

In Division 1, Andy Lott and Jacqui Ng were the home run leaders.

BaseballSoftballUK North West Development Manager Luis Arrevillagas said, “Time seems to have flown by since the inaugural season in 2014 -- it seems only yesterday we had one pitch with two teams.  Next season we will have five pitches with 16 teams.  If you ask any of the players in the league, it keeps growing because we have a welcoming atmosphere while remaining competitive, and it’s a great place for players who have played for 20 years to mix with complete rookies.”

North West Coach Linni Mitchell added, “As well as the usual fixtures and results, we like to give the teams extras, so things like having free chips after games and posting highlight reels of games every week make all the difference.”

Next season

The Manchester Indoor League’s Winter 2019 season will begin on Tuesday 8 January, again with two divisions of eight teams.
