London Mets to host Federation Cup Qualifier at Farnham Park

Fri 13 Nov 2015

The Confederation of European Baseball (CEB) has announced the hosts for its 2016 European Cups and Championships, and one of three qualifying tournaments for its Federation Cup will be hosted by the London Mets at Farnham Park, with support from the BBF and BSUK.

The tournament will be played from 20-26 June next year and will feature six European championship club teams, including the London Mets.  The Mets earned the right to return to Federations Cup competition in 2016 by winning the BBF's NBL National Championship title this past September.

The Mets and the Essex Arrows both competed in Federations Cup Qualifiers in 2015, in Karlovac and Antwerp respectively, ending a long stretch without British participation in CEB club tournaments.  Each team won only a single game, but the Mets will fancy their chances of doing better next year on home soil.

Teams that take part in the Federations Cup are:

  • The runner-up from Federations that already have one representative in the Champions Cup, CEB Cup and Federations Cup.
  • The champions of a Federation not otherwise participating in the Champions Cup, CEB Cup and Federations Cup.
  • The runner-up of the best-ranked Federations that are not participating in the Champions Cup, CEB Cup and Federations Cup.

New ground

When this exciting European baseball competition kicks off at Farnham Park next summer, it will be the first time a UK club will have hosted a Federations Cup Qualifier and the first time this competition will have been played in the UK.

No official European baseball competitions have been played in the UK since the 1990s, when Hull hosted the 1992 European Cup of Cups club competition, the 1996 European B Pool Championships and the European Junior Championships in 1997.

Two other Federations Cup Qualifiers will run simultaneously next June in Barcelona and Antwerp.  The winners of these three tournaments will advance to the final round, to be played in September in Brno, Czech Republic, where they will joined already-qualified teams from Belgium, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Russia, Slovakia and Sweden.

London Mets Head Coach Erick Henson said, "This is an incredible honour and the Mets are thrilled.  We are also extremely grateful for the generous support provided by the BBF and BSUK.  We will do everything we can to make British baseball proud.  It will be a great event at a great venue, and we can use all the fan support we can get against tough opponents.  Hopefully, British baseball fans will mark their calendars and come out to cheer us on."

BBF President Earl Dix added: "As one of the leading clubs in the UK, I am delighted that the London Mets are going to host the CEB Qualifiers at Farnham Park.  BSUK’s support is of huge benefit to the project and I’m looking forward to this being an event that will bring British baseball to the attention of sports fans everywhere."

Bob Fromer from BSUK said, “Hosting an important European baseball competition in the UK after almost 20 years without one is a real milestone, and shows how much the sport is growing and developing here.  The London Mets deserve a huge amount of credit for seeing and seizing this opportunity and for finding the resources to make it happen.”

Meanwhile, the event organisers are looking for both volunteers and sponsors.  If you would like to volunteer for or sponsor this event, please contact {}.
