Ed Blankmeyer to be keynote baseball speaker at the 2019 Coach Summit

Wed 21 Nov 2018

Ed Blankmeyer, the winningest coach in the history of the baseball programme at NCAA Division 1 St John’s University in New York City, has been announced as the keynote baseball speaker at BaseballSoftballUK’s 2019 Coach Summit.

The 2019 Coach Summit will be held on Saturday 26 January at the Kents Hill Park Training & Conference Centre in Milton Keynes, and will consist of keynote speeches, discussions, workshops and seminars for baseball and fastpitch softball coaches, with content of interest for slowpitch coaches as well.

The keynote speaker for fastpitch softball is expected to be announced shortly.

The general theme of this year's Summit will be “Preparing for the Future of Baseball and Softball in the UK”.

This theme is set against a background where participation levels in the sports are at an all-time high, both baseball and fastpitch softball have been returned to the programme for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and the 2019 MLB London Series will bring Major League Baseball to the UK for the first time.

With all this going on, it is crucial to the future success of the sports in this country that our coaches are ready.

Ed Blankmeyer will enter his 24th season at the helm of the St John’s University baseball programme in 2019 with an all-time record of 798-477-4.  Blankmeyer has guided the Red Storm to five Big East Tournament crowns, six Big East regular season titles and 11 NCAA Tournament berths.

The winningest coach in the history of Big East play with 338 conference victories, Blankmeyer has earned Big East Coach of the Year honours a conference-record eight times and has been named the Northeast Region Coach of the Year four times.  His teams have had nine 40-win seasons, and Blankmeyer has coached more than 100 players who have gone on to play professional baseball, including Major League Hall of Famer Craig Biggio, the 1995 American League MVP Mo Vaughn, Matt Morris, John Valentin, Rob Delaney, Craig Hansen and 2014 World Series winner Joe Panik.

In January of 2018, Blankmeyer became the third St John’s head coach inducted into the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Hall of Fame.  The longtime skipper also found himself honoured by the Greater New York Sandlot Athletic Alliance with the Jack Kaiser Coaching Excellence Award, celebrating his contributions to amateur baseball throughout the New York Metropolitan Area.

In addition to his duties in the dugout, Blankmeyer has also been heavily involved in the management of collegiate baseball off the field, and In 2015 he was awarded the prestigious honour of serving a one-year term as President of the American Baseball Coaches Association.

An outstanding second baseman in his own right, Blankmeyer played four seasons at Seton Hall University, hitting .320, and was the starting second baseman for both the 1974 and 1975 Seton Hall teams that played in the College World Series.  He earned Academic All-America honours during his time at Seton Hall and graduated in 1976.  Following graduation, Blankmeyer was a 21st-round pick of the Baltimore Orioles and spent one season in the Orioles farm system before beginning his coaching career.
