BSUK planning schools survey in advance of London Series games

Wed 15 May 2019

Major League Baseball games will be played for the first time in London at the end of June 2019 and again in 2020, and baseball and softball will be included in next year’s Tokyo Olympics.

With the interest and excitement around baseball and softball that these events will generate, BaseballSoftballUK (BSUK) would like to work with SGOs and schools to set up new baseball/softball programmes and further support those schools that already play one or both of the sports.

But first, BSUK would first like to gain a more complete picture of the number and type of schools programmes that currently exist across all English schools, as a base from which to create more opportunities for children to play the sports.

To do this, a schools baseball/softball survey has been created that can be accessed here:

To provide a further incentive, every school that completes the survey will be entered into a prize draw for two tickets to the Mitel and MLB Present London Series game between the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox on Saturday 29 June at London Stadium.

The MLB games will present a unique opportunity to raise awareness of baseball and softball and to set up programmes in schools, not just in London but around the country.  With the help of significant government funding from Sport England since 2005, BaseballSoftballUK has already made great strides in giving the games a place in British sporting life, more than doubling the number of participants from around 10,000 in 2008 to over 25,000 in 2019.

Baseball and softball has grown steadily in schools in England over the past 15 years since BSUK became a National Development Agency for the sports and there is even more potential for schools and SGOs to offer these inclusive, fun and exciting sports to both girls and boys at primary and secondary schools.

BaseballSoftballUK CEO John Boyd said, “Major League Baseball bringing regular-season games to London had been under discussion for a while but is now a wonderful reality.  The fact that the teams coming to London Stadium are the Yankees and the Red Sox, two of the sport’s most iconic franchises, makes it even better.  We are excited about the opportunity these games present to develop the sports still further in schools and to get more children and young people playing across the UK.”
