2020 brings 20 teams to Manchester Indoor Softball League

Fri 24 Jan 2020

The Winter 2020 season of the Manchester Indoor Softball League commenced on Tuesday 14th January, with 20 teams playing at Fives Trafford for the next 10 weeks. There have been a few changes to the teams in both divisions, with Drizzle gaining promotion to Division One in Autumn 2019 and Marauders being relegated down to the Second Division. The league also added two new teams, with the addition of the Camels in Division One and Camels Two in the Second Division.

Since the league was formed six years ago, the popularity of the league has multiplied, starting with three teams and growing to 20. Initially, the league was small enough to run on a single indoor pitch; now the teams play on six pitches . A second division was created in Autumn 2018 to allow for growth and the league has seen new teams introduced to the indoor softball league each year, predominantly made from graduating rookies from the beginner sessions that also run on Tuesday evenings.

Following rookie sessions in Autumn 2019, a rookie team called the Manchester Sluggababes have formed and plan to enter upcoming indoor tournaments, before debuting in the outdoor Manchester Softball League over the summer.

Linni Mitchell, North West Coach commented, “The league has got off to a fantastic start and reaching 20 participating teams is a great milestone. After 10 weeks of rookie sessions, the regulars have decided to form the Manchester Sluggababes, and I’m looking forward to helping them to improve their softball skills over the next few weeks.”

Discussing the competition, Luis Arrevillagas, BaseballSoftballUK's North West Development Manager, said, “64 home runs were reported in week one of the current Winter League, which is crazy when I think back to when the league started with just three teams in 2014. We set up the league to encourage players to stay fit through the autumn/winter months and to help baseball and softball teams recruit in the off season, and we’re thrilled that the popularity of the league has been on the up ever since.”

As well as the weekly league nights, the league's organisers are also hosting two indoor tournaments. Entry is now open for the Single-Sex Tournament on 22nd February as well as the Winter 2020 Co-Ed Tournament on 14th March.
