Three teams move to on Europe after UK Little League Qualifiers

Wed 20 Jun 2018

The 2018 edition of the UK Little Qualifiers, staged over the weekend of 16-17 June, was the largest yet, with 19 teams participating across five divisions over two busy days at Farnham Park Baseball and Softball Complex.

The UK Little League Qualifier is the culmination of local youth club play in Britain, with All-Star teams put together to compete for the right to represent the UK at the Europe and Africa Little League Regional Qualifiers later in the summer.

The winners of the Europe/Africa tournaments will go on to Little League World Series competitions in the United States in the various age groups.

The 2018 UK Qualifiers had some extremely well-contested games across all the divisions, with teams overcoming early deficits to win, and others staving off late momentum shifts to secure their victory.

Congratulations

Congratulations go to the following teams, who earned the right to represent the UK at the Europe and Africa Regional Tournaments:

  • The U17 / Senior Division Champions London Mets will travel to Novaro, Italy to compete at the Europe and Africa Little League Senior Division Regional Tournament from 2-6 July.

  • The U15 / Junior Division Champions London Youth Baseball League (LYBL) will travel to Kutno, Poland to compete at the Europe and Africa Little League Junior Division Regional Tournament from 28 June-5 July.

  • The U13 / Majors Division Champion LondonSports will travel to Kutno, Poland to compete at the Europe and Africa Little League Majors Division Regional Tournament from 20-28 July.

Little League Tournament Director Johanna Malisani said, "This is by far one of my favourite events in the youth calendar!  The rain stayed away, and we had our most successful UK Little League Qualifiers to date!  The standard of play continues to improve, with several really close games, particularly in the Majors division, and an extra inning high-scoring affair in the Seniors division.

“The best part of the weekend for me personally,” Johanna added, “is seeing our youth progammes assemble together at Farnham Park for a weekend of baseball under the Little League ethos 'to play fair, strive to win but win or lose to do my best!', and that is exactly what this weekend embodied!

“I would be remiss if I did not thank a few key parties.  A big thank you to Home Plate Bar and Kitchen -- Sara and staff -- for keeping all of us hydrated and fed over the weekend and an even bigger thank you to the parents, athletes, coaches, umpires and tournament staff for their efforts in making this the best UKLLQ yet.  Without you this weekend is not possible!  I can't wait for next year!"
