School Softball Series kicks off development work at Farnham Park

Tue 27 May 2014

A programme of development work based at BSUK's dedicated baseball and softball facility at Farnham Park got under way on Thursday 15 May when seven area secondary schools  met in the first round of the Farnham Park School Softball Series (FPSSS).

The FPSSS is a project led by BaseballSoftballUK to encourage schools across Buckinghamshire to create and sustain softball clubs and to use Farnham Park as a centre for competition.

Funding from Bucks and Milton Keynes Sport has been secured for the programme, which also involves players from local softball clubs delivering coaching at the schools and helping to facilitate FPSSS game days.

Each of the schools involved sent at least one teacher to a BSUK Teacher Training Course on 30 April.

The FPSSS is a four-date competition series with a trophy for the winning team and a shield for the team that finishes second.

The targeted age group is 13-15 year olds (Years 9 and 10), and softball clubs in each school will receive jerseys and equipment to help sustain their programme.

The participating schools are: Burnham Grammar School, Chalfont Community College, Buckingham School, Cressex Community School, Wycombe High School, Challoners High Girls School, Dr Challoners Boys School and Amersham School.

The aim is for students who take part in the programme to feed eventually into clubs in the Windsor and Maidenhead District Mixed Softball League to develop further within the sport.

On the day

The first FPSSS competition day was played in brilliant sunshine on 15 May.

Players from Challoners High Girls School and Dr Challoners Boys School combined to form two mixed teams and were joined by Cressex Community School, Burnham Grammar School, Amersham School, Chalfont Community College and Wycombe School, which brought an all-girls' team that held its own throughout the afternoon.

With help from Emma Rhodes and Neil Turner from Chalfont Softball Club and Julie Spittle from Richings Park Softball Club, games ran on three pitches simultaneously for the two hours that the schools were there.  Many of the games were very close, with only one or two runs separating the teams, and there were a couple of ties.

Julie Spittle said: “All the teams had some big hitters and also some very good fielders, with fly balls being caught, ground balls being scooped and outs being made at all bases throughout the afternoon.”

The scores from the first day's play in the FPSSS were:

Chalfont Centurions 8, Cressex Crusaders 4
Amersham Aftershocks 7, Wycombe School 6
Cressex Crusaders 8, Wycombe School 2
Burnham Grizzlies 6, Amersham Aftershocks 4
Challoners Chargers A 5, Cressex Crusaders 5
Challoners Chargers A 6, Challoners Chargers B 5
Chalfont Centurions 4, Challoners Chargers A 3
Challoners Chargers B 2, Burnham Grizzlies 2

When the series resumes, teams will play the schools they haven't yet faced.
