MLB London Series: When Jenny met A-Rod

Thu 13 Dec 2018

On 19 November, Major League Baseball came to London to begin promotion for next year’s games between the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees, and one of the star attractions on the day was Alex Rodriguez, former Yankee third baseman and one of the iconic players of his era.

A-Rod, as he is universally known, had a long day, with a constant stream of media interviews and photoshoots, and he handled all of it with charm and grace.

He also took part in a coaching session with about 20 secondary school boys and girls from the Bobby Moore Academy in East London, a school that sits in the shadow of the London Stadium where the MLB games will be played next summer.

BaseballSoftballUK’s London Development Manager Liz Knight helped out at the session, and CEO John Boyd was in attendance.

Also at the session was Jenny Fromer, President of the British Softball Federation, a long-time Yankee fan and a particular admirer of A-Rod – and it was a thrill for Jenny when she got to conduct a wide-ranging interview with Alex later in the day for BSUK TV.

John Boyd, "Interviewing a star such as A-Rod is an incredible opportunity to raise the profile of British baseball and softball, for which I would like to thank MLB.  There will be many more such opportunities in the coming months and through 2020.  The nation’s attention is on us, and we still have a lot of work to do to make sure the London Series connects with the existing playing community and fan base, creates a lasting legacy and connects with new people to the sports."

Jenny’s conversation with Alex Rodriguez, who now works as a commentator on ESPN Sunday Night Baseball and for other networks, covered a number of subjects, including why MLB chose London to bring Major League Baseball to Europe, whether Meghan and Harry might attend the games, the importance of Little League in developing baseball and softball in the UK and what benefit the London Series could bring to women and girls playing softball.

Alex had thoughtful answers to these and other questions, but above all, he was thrilled that the first teams that will ever play regular-season games in Europe are the Yankees and the Red Sox.

“2019 is about the best,” A-Rod said, “and we’re flying over the pond with the two greatest teams, both of them red-hot right now – the World Champions and the New York Yankees!”
