Manchester Indoor League gets underway for the autumn season

Sat 6 Oct 2018

The first games in the Autumn 2018 Manchester Indoor Softball League season were played at Powerleague Trafford on Tuesday 2 October.

In its 10th season, the Manchester Indoor Softball League now has two divisions, with eight teams in each.  Divisions 1 and 2 will play on alternate Tuesdays until 4 December, completing two rotations of league games and one rotation of cup games, with finals for gold, silver, bronze and wooden spoon awards scheduled for the final week.

The League has also introduced a number of new features this year, as detailed below:

New players

Alongside league games, beginners’ sessions are being held from 8.00-9.00 pm on Tuesday evenings on Pitch 7 at the Powerleague venue, led by BaseballSoftballUK North West Coach Linni Mitchell.  The cost for these sessions is £5 per week.

However, if new players want to jump in at the deep and join a league team straightaway, their risk will be rewarded.  Players who are brand new to the game in the UK will be given ‘Rookie Wristbands’, which give that player an additional run when crossing home plate, meaning newbies score two runs instead of one.

This is a great incentive for players to invite their friends, acquaintances and associates along to try the sport, and gives those new players great value within the team.

New team

This season, the Indoor League has welcomed the Stingers, a brand-new team that got together following rookie sessions held by the Manchester Softball League over the summer months.

Debuting in Division 2 on Opening Night, the Stingers finished with an impressive two wins from their four games, a noble effort for their first time playing indoor softball.

New rules

The Manchester Indoor League has introduced new rules for this season, with two players now required to be in front of first and third base when the ball is pitched.  This creates more room in at the back of the pitch and more space for fielders and runners.

No fielders other than the pitcher may be inside the diamond until the ball is hit and fielders must remain an arm’s length from the baselines.

New Single-Sex League

A Single-Sex Indoor League will be introduced in Manchester later this month, with games starting on Sunday 21 October.  This six-week league will run on Sunday afternoons from 3.00-5.00 pm at Powerleague Trafford.

BaseballSoftballUK North West Development Manager Luis Arrevillagas said, “We are really excited to set up the first Indoor single-sex league in the region.  We have noticed an increasing demand for single-sex games and there are a number of well-established single-sex teams in the North West, so we are delighted to gives these teams the opportunity to play weekly fixtures during the autumn.”

The Single-Sex League will begin with six teams -- three men’s teams and three women’s teams -- who will play on two pitches over the two hours, so each team will play the others twice per session.

“The six available spots were snapped up within 24 hours of announcing the league,” Luis added.  “We wanted to start small and get it right, then look to expand to more teams during the Winter 2019 season.”

Linni Mitchell said, “Single-sex softball gives players the opportunity to play positions they’ve not had the chance to play in co-ed competition, which is great for individual player development.  There is a real appetite for single-sex teams in our region, so we are excited to give these teams an outlet for play and we hope this will breed more single-sex teams for the 2019 summer season.

“We are also planning a Single-Sex Indoor Tournament and we’ll be announcing the date on our Facebook page.”

Tournament

The fourth Manchester Indoor Co-ed Slowpitch Tournament will take place on 1 December 2018.

Earlier this year, in March, 15 teams from around the country entered the third edition and another fantastic turnout is expected in December.

The team entry fee will be £145 and the  first pitch will be at 1.00 pm on the day.
