Manchester concludes successful Autumn Indoor Softball season

Tue 12 Dec 2017

On Tuesday 5 December, players and organisers waved goodbye to the eighth season of the Manchester Indoor Softball League, established in 2014, when this year’s Autumn schedule came to an end.

In January, the Winter league will get under way boasting 18 teams –- three more than in the Autumn.

The Swifts from the University of Salford and the Maelstrom from the University of Manchester will be welcomed into the league along with a brand-new team, the Base Invaders, who attended a 10-week crash course in softball with weekly sessions during the autumn season.

Craig Brooks, Base Invaders’ Vice-Captain said, “The rookie sessions helped us all to progress as a team.  The difference from Week One to now is ridiculous!  We’re all looking forward to starting the Winter season and getting our first win!”

BaseballSoftballUK North West Coach Linni Mitchell, who delivered the rookie sessions added,  “As Craig said, the progression from Week 1 to Week 10 was absolutely phenomenal.  Every single player has been committed, and improved week on week.  I love that this group of players, who had never played softball before, have been well and truly bitten by the softball bug and I’m looking forward to seeing their skills continue to develop playing in the Winter league.”

Autumn season

The title for the Autumn Manchester Indoor Season, which ran for nine weeks from October through early December, was captured by Thunder, who won 37 of their 42 league games, closely followed by Mavericks with 36 wins.

An additional week then consisted of Cup games where teams were split into Gold, Silver, Bronze and Foil groups, corresponding with their final placings in the league table.   Each group played a round-robin, with the two top teams playing in the group final.

Thunder did the double, taking the Gold Cup title in a close final against the Camels.

Tigers beat Mayhem to take the Silver Cup, and Tugboat Skippers won the Bronze Cup, defeating Titans.

Awards

Awards were given to individuals and teams at the end of the final week, voted for by the League Committee, including awards to home run champions Martine Knight with 12 and Joe Grantham with 23 over the nine weeks of league play.

Last year’s rookie team, the Meteors, won the award for Most Improved Team.

The Camels’ Adam Hugill was recognised for his impressive nine home runs in one week, while Rippers’ rookie Phil Cantrill won Rookie of the Season.

Awards were also given to Mike Lott and Tereza Kokocinska from the Tigers and to Tom Russell and Charlotte Green from Thunder for the most impressive plays caught on camera.

Comments and thanks

BaseballSoftballUK Development Manager Luis Arrevillagas said, “I’m already looking forward to Winter 2018, which will be our biggest Indoor season yet!  In January 2014 we started with three teams on one pitch and from at the start of the next season in January we will have 18 teams over six pitches.  We are really proud of the growth of the league over the past three years and we are always on the lookout for things to improve the offering.  Free chips have gone down a treat with teams, and the response to the weekly highlight videos has been fantastic over the past couple of years.  Bring on 2018!”

The Manchester Indoor Softball League would like to thank Pincho’s Tapas Restaurant in Didsbury, which donated two free drinks vouchers for players who scored the most home runs each week and provided a 10% discount on food for the league’s ‘Team of the Week’.

Winter League

The Manchester Winter Indoor Softball League will run between from 16 January through 21 March 2018, and on Saturday 3 March the third Manchester Indoor Tournament will be held at Powerleague Trafford.

The second Indoor Tournament, which took place on 2 December, was a great success, with 16 teams competing.  Although the third installment is three months away, captains have already begun signing up their teams for this highly-regarded tournament.
