Jon Carter appointed as Farnham Park and South East Summer Coach

Fri 13 May 2016

BaseballSoftballUK has appointed Jon Carter, who has a long history with British baseball and more recently has founded a Baseball/Softball Academy in Northern Ireland, to be a Summer Coach at Farnham Park and across the South East Region.

Jon, who holds BSUK Level 2 certification, will be helping to deliver a range of community programming at and around Farnham Park over the next few months, including schools baseball and softball sessions, baseball for adult beginners and kids, adult slowpitch softball and women’s and girls’ fastpitch.

The aim of all these programmes is to increase the number of new people playing the sports at Farnham Park, building on development work done there over the past two seasons.  Jon will be supported by Farnham Park Baseball and Softball Club coaches and volunteers and by BSUK Fastpitch Development Officer Johanna Malisani.

Jon said, "I am super excited to have been chosen for the role of BSUK Summer Coach at the UK's #1 baseball and softball facility, Farnham Park.  Being given the chance to help grow the sports around the local community and at Farnham Park Baseball and Softball Club will be a challenge, but a challenge I will relish.  I'm looking forward to going into schools and leading the delivery of adult baseball and softball programmes."

After starting out as a semi-professional footballer with various clubs in the South East, Jon Carter moved over to baseball in the late 1990s and became a player, coach and the General Manager at Tonbridge Baseball Club, which produced a large number of young players who went on to achieve selection for GB Baseball programmes.

Jon then spent six years with the Brighton Buccaneers, winning three National Championships and helping the club reach the final of the European Cup in 2000.  Jon was a regular selection for the GB Senior Baseball Team from 2002-2004.

Later, after moving to Northern Ireland, Jon became a Committee member on the Castlereagh Sports Development Association, rejuvenated the Belfast Northstars Baseball Club, founded the Ulster Buccaneers Baseball & Softball Club and in 2013 founded Academy Baseball/Softball Ireland, running weekly sessions for children with funding from the Northern Ireland Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure.

He has also led an effort to secure Northern Ireland’s first purpose-built baseball facility, which is due to open this summer.

Key responsibilities

As the Summer Coach at Farnham Park Baseball and Softball Club, Jon Carter’s key responsibilities will include:

  • Coaching at local schools and other community-based programmes, including adult workplace slowpitch softball, youth and adult baseball and women’s and youth Fastpitch softball.
  • Coaching in existing club environments across adult and youth baseball and slowpitch and fastpitch softball.
  • Mentoring other coaches in the development pathways set up by BSUK.
  • Planning and delivering clinics for coaches and players in club, college and community settings.
