Job Vacancy: Academy Softball Head Coach

BSUK is looking for a dynamic, skilled and talented person to be the Head Coach of Academy Softball.  Working closely with the Director of Academy Softball and BSUK National Development Manager, the role will provide valuable technical, operational and strategic support to BSUK's Academy Softball programme.

This position will pay £2,000 annually plus travel expenses on a consultancy basis.

The job

The Academy Softball Head Coach will be primarily responsible for the new High Performance Academy, but will also provide technical guidance and support to Academy Softball and will work with the Academy  Director and BSUK National Development Manager to support the operations of both programmes.

This includes:

  • Oversight of technical aspects of the High Performance Academy, including Academy Softball.
  • Developing a learning programme for athletes aged 10-25.
  • Planning all national and regional Academy Softball practices and the London High Performance practices.
  • Serving as the lead coach at national and regional Academy Softball practices and the London High Performance practices.
  • Recruiting, evaluating and monitoring coaches.
  • Recruiting, evaluating and monitoring athletes.
  • Supporting the Director of Academy Softball in keeping the coaching database up to date, including certificates, DBS checks and other qualifications.
  • Enhancing the coaching programme and knowledge at Academy Softball.

The High Performance Academy will run initially as a short 10-week pilot from February through to April 2014, with one mid-week practice at a venue to be selected in the West London / South East region.  In future years the HPA will run from November to Easter with a four to five week break over Christmas.

Academy Softball currently runs six national practices at Milton Keynes (4) and Farnham Park (2) as well as eight regional practices in Nottingham (4) and Uxbridge (4).

The major challenge of the position lies in the responsibility to support and assist in the production of a programme that will help develop players' skills and game knowledge. The goal is the development of a strong, sustainable programme that will develop players' abilities during the off-season to prepare them for the following club/national team season.

Key responsibilities

High Performance and Academy Softball Programme

  • Plan and implement a player development programme across the High Performance Academy.
  • Plan and deliver all Academy Softball sessions and activities.
  • Support the BSUK National Development Manager in a strategic approach to talent development in fastpitch softball, including the implementation of and continuous refinement of the English Talent Pathway.
  • Review and monitor the objectives of player and coach development as well as supporting BaseballSoftballUK's strategic objectives for Sport England.
  • Support and monitor the Academy Softball budget and the selling of Academy apparel in partnership with the Director of Academy Softball and National Development Manager.

Partnerships and Relationships

  • Prepare annual operations reports, annual applications for funding and other reports as required by the BSUK National Development Manager.
  • Work collaboratively with BSUK, the BSF, club/leagues, schools, colleges and County Sports Partnerships with regard to recruiting potential talented athletes.
  • Work collaboratively with the British Softball Federation and GB Softball to ensure a streamlined approach to scheduling.


  • Recruit additional support staff to the High Performance Academy and Academy Softball as needed.
  • Participate in BSUK's Talent Development Steering Group and the BSF's GB Management Committee as appropriate.
  • Contribute to the general running of the High Performance Academy and Academy Softball as needed.
