Hit the Pitch Lewisham hits further in second year

BaseballSoftballUK's Hit the Pitch softball programme, in partnership with NHS South East London and Fusion Leisure, is drawing increasing numbers of people onto the diamond in Lewisham.
Softball sessions are currently running at the Bridge Leisure Centre in Lewisham as part of BSUK's mission to create new adult teams in London. The sessions are open to women and men at all levels and to anyone aged over 14 (though under-16s need to be accompanied by an adult).
A new club based at the Leisure Centre site, the Lewisham Lions, has been created from members of the public who have attended the sessions, and the Lions are now looking ahead to playing friendly games and consolidating as a club. The club provides a friendly atmosphere and is always looking for more people to come and try the sport.
Partnership
Matt Houghton from Fusion Leisure has been delighted with the uptake of the Hit the Pitch softball sessions.
“Softball at the Bridge has been a success thanks to the funding and support from NHS Lewisham as well as the coaching and support provided by BSUK,” Houghton said. “Through this support, those who have been attending the sessions have chosen to form the Lewisham Lions Softball Club, using the Bridge Leisure Centre as their home. This demonstrates what positive and proactive partnerships can do, which Fusion have been proud to be a part of. Now we want to see even more local people come down and join in the softball.”
Patrick Knock, BSUK Regional Development Manager for London, said: “Thanks to the support and funding from Danny Ruta and Sylvia Curtis at NHS South East London as well as the partnership with Fusion Leisure, the second year of softball in Lewisham has grown again. This year, as well as NHS and Council staff, the local community has been encouraged to come down to sessions. With open Hit the Pitch sessions running at the Bridge and with NHS staff at Ladywell Fields, Lewisham is becoming a hub of softball activity, which is great news!”
