BSUK seeking members for new LGBT Advisory Panel
Fri 24 Feb 2017
BaseballSoftballUK is seeking members for a new LGBT Advisory Panel to help the organisation learn and improve the way it works with the LGBT (Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender) community.
BaseballSoftballUK (BSUK) is the development agency for baseball and softball in the UK, set up as a joint venture of the British Baseball and Softball Federations, the National Governing Bodies (NGBs) for the two sports. Our vision is for our sports to be “played in every park.” Our key areas of work are growing the number of adults and young people playing regularly in teams and improving the sporting experience for those people who participate in our sports.
BSUK and LGBT participation
BaseballSoftballUK is seeking to learn and improve the way it works with the LGBT (Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender) community, so that we can make a positive impact on the participation of new and existing LGBT members. We want to ensure that baseball and softball are safe and welcoming sports for LGBT participants, and we hope to grow the existing LGBT playing community.
BSUK is currently organising the third annual LGBT Softball Tournament in Manchester (scheduled for 20 May 2017). Last year nine teams entered the event, including the London Raiders and teams from Leeds and Liverpool as well as from Manchester (http://www.baseballsoftballuk.com/news/view/carnival-atmosphere-at-manchester-lgbt-rookie-charity-tournament).
We have had a productive working relationship for the past four years with Pride Sport (http://www.pridesports.org.uk/), who have helped us develop the way we engage with the LGBT community.
We are also planning on taking a softball team to the Gay Games in Paris on 4-12 August 2018 (http://www.paris2018.com/). Expressions of interest in participating in this team will be sought in the autumn of this year.
The purpose of the LGBT Advisory Panel is to set the strategy for BSUK’s LGBT work and to monitor and evaluate BSUK’s effectiveness in delivering this strategy. In addition, the panel will help to draft relevant policy for BSUK in order to better promote and deliver this work. The Panel will formally engage more people from the baseball and softball communities in the development of the sports for LGBT participants, and will report to the BSUK Board.
The Panel will meet in person up to three times a year and will otherwise communicate electronically. We are looking for up to five people from within baseball and softball who have a particular interest in this area and feel that they could positively contribute to the Panel’s work.
Key aims of the Panel will include:
- Fostering creative ideas.
- Setting BSUK LGBT strategy and policy.
- Providing a forum where issues and ideas can be openly discussed.
- Developing initiatives that can be delivered in conjunction with the British Baseball and Softball Federations.
- Offering training, support and guidance.
- Setting up networking opportunities.
Providing representation for LGBT participants in baseball and softball.
