BSUK announces partnership with Sport England TASS

Wed 3 Sep 2014

BaseballSoftballUK is pleased to announce a new partnership with the Sport England Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (Sport England TASS), a government-funded programme that provides  a partnership between talented young athletes, National Governing Bodies, and the Higher Education (university) and Further Eucation (college/school) sector.

TASS has recently realigned its core mission and values to be much closer to those of Sport England.  As such, baseball and softball now have an opportunity to form a partnership with TASS through Sport England's Talent programming.

Varied awards

A total of 27 sports will receive support from Sport England TASS in 2014-15:

  • Sixteen NGBs will be offered awards to support athletes in their England Talent Pathway (ETP).

  • Five NGBs will be offered awards to support athletes as part of individual projects through developing links with the education sector.

  • Five NGBs will receive support via individual projects to strengthen their talent pathway and increase opportunities for athletes by developing links with the education sector.

BaseballSoftballUK is one of the five NGBs in this last group.  It is hoped that by working with Sport England TASS, BSUK will be able to strengthen the English Talent Pathway for athletes looking to study at university in the UK.

Opportunities in the UK

BSUK National Development Manager Will Lintern explained, "The current situation is that if any of our talented young baseball or women's fastpitch athletes have aspirations to play on their respective Senior national teams, then they often need to play overseas, ideally in the US collegiate system.  However, this option is not always possible due to the challenges of attending university overseas and the finances involved with being an international student.

“While the details are still to be confirmed,” Will added, “the opportunity to work with Sport England TASS presents a number of options for us to enhance the Talent Development opportunities available to our young athletes in the UK.  We are looking to develop relationships with universities and colleges whose staff expertise and facilities will help us to create a performance environment for students similar to the environment we have created at our High Performance Academy, which currently works with athletes aged 15-19.”

More details about BSUK's partnership with Sport England TASS will be published as the relationship continues to develop.
