BSUK announces key dates for the Academy and High Performance Academy for 2014-15

Sat 16 Aug 2014

BaseballSoftballUK has announced the key dates that will form the backbone of the programme for Academy Baseball and Softball and the High Performance Academies for both sports during the 2014-15 closed season.

Even though the current season is still under way, with playoffs and National Championships upcoming, BaseballSoftballUK’s talent team is already looking ahead to 2015.  Plans are in place to follow the success of the Great Britain Under-19 Baseball and Women's Fastpitch teams this summer.  Both teams made history, as the Under-19 Faspitch Team secured a best-ever fourth place finish at the European Championships, while Under-18 Baseball Team qualified for next summer’s European Championships for the first time in 10 years.

Dates

The Academy will open with a joint practice event at Farnham Park on Saturday 4 October, and this will be followed on Sunday 5 October with an open tryout for the 2014-15 High Performance Academy.

High Performance Academy

Building on its initial success last spring, the High Performance Academy, funded by Sport England, will extend its programme to begin on the weekend of 1-2 November 2014.

Over that weekend, the performance athletes selected for the programme will be guided through a number of performance-based workshops, including goal setting, lifestyle management, balancing school with sport and building on last year’s theme of “What does is it mean to be an elite athlete?”.  Expanding the opening to two days will enable the HPA staff to include some physical tests and analysis to set benchmarks against which the athletes will then be assessed over the winter.

Mid-week practices and the HPA's long-distance learning programme will then run from November to Easter, with a five-to-six-week break over Christmas.

The High Performance Academy is open to boys (baseball) and girls (fastpitch softball) aged 15-20.  Anyone wishing to be a part of the HPA must attend tryouts on Sunday 5 October at Farnham Park.

Academy Baseball and Softball

The Academy Baseball and Softball programmes during the 2014-15 off-season will run in much the same way as in previous years.  There will be six national practices (two at Farnham Park and four in Milton Keynes), plus four regional practices.

Dates and venues for the national and regional Practices will be confirmed in the next two weeks.

The Academy is open to all boys and girls aged 10-25 regardless of ability.  Player registration for the 2014-15 Academy season will open next week via the BSUK website.

Coaching and volunteering

Details on specific coaching roles in the Academy will be announced soon.  But if you are interested in coaching or volunteering at Academy Baseball or Softball practices this winter, please send an email to academy@bsuk.com and reference which Academy you wish to be involved with.
