BaseballSoftballUK looking for volunteers for London Series events

Thu 9 May 2019

The New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox will be playing the first-ever MLB games in Europe on 29 and 30 June at the London Stadium, and the week leading up to the games will be filled with events and activities for fans and especially for children and young people.

Now, MLB has asked for our assistance to put out a call for volunteers from the baseball/softball community to help run these events during Britain’s biggest-ever baseball and softball celebration.

Volunteers will be needed at various times during the period from Sunday 23 June through Sunday 30 June, primarily around the London Stadium and in East London.

Benefits for volunteers will include all meals and drinks provided on the days they’re working, an official MLB Volunteer Equipment Pack which includes an exclusive jersey, water bottle, pin and hat and an invitation to the London Series Workout Day the Yankees and Red Sox will hold at the London Stadium on Friday 28 June.  Also, for some volunteers, entry to the stadium on game days will be provided once volunteer work has been completed.

Volunteer types

Three types of volunteers are needed:

  • Coaches who have experience running clinics with kids.

  • Assistant Coaches who know the fundamentals of baseball or softball, have played to a reasonable level and are comfortable throwing batting practice to clinic participants.

  • Support Staff.  No specific baseball or softball knowledge is required, but support staff need to be responsible and competent adults who will be comfortable doing a variety of tasks – for example, operating a pitching machine.

While the largest number of volunteers needed are Support Staff, with as many as 20 required for some events, there will also be a need at times for up to 15 people with the background to serve as Assistant Coaches and up to eight Coaches who can direct sessions with children. All voluntary coaches should have a current Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, and we will check and support new applications submitted in a timely manner.  Volunteers need to be over 18.

Only successful applicants will be contacted.

Events

Volunteers will be needed to help run four main events or activities:

1) The MLB Cup.  This is a closed-entry competition for young baseball and softball players that will take place at PLAY BALL Park at the Bobby Moore Academy, next to the London Stadium, on Sunday 23 June.  The tournament will be played by four Majors (Under-13) baseball teams and two fastpitch softball teams.  Ten Coaches and Support Staff will be needed from 8.00 am to 6.30 pm.

2) PLAY BALL Events.  PLAY BALL Park will serve as the hub for a wide range of youth-focused baseball and softball activity from Monday through Wednesday, 24-26 June.  The PLAY BALL Park space will include a temporary baseball/softball diamond, pitching tunnels, batting cages and baseball virtual reality portals.  Two Coaches and varying numbers of Assistant Coaches and Support Staff volunteers will be needed between 8.30 am and 5.00 pm from Monday through Wednesday.

3) London Yards Fan Fest. An ongoing celebration of baseball culture, including music, baseball virtual reality interactives, Boston and New York cuisine and live screenings of the Yankee-Red Sox games will go on at the Truman Brewery near Brick Lane on Thursday evening 27 June and then, with support from two volunteer Coaches needed, from 10.00 am to 10.00 pm on Saturday and Sunday.

4) Game Day Activations at PLAY BALL Park.  On 29 and 30 June, when the Yankees and Red Sox will be battling inside the London Stadium, PLAY BALL Park will still be open, from 1.00-8.10 pm on Saturday and 10.00 am-5.10 pm on Sunday, offering all its activities and features to fans of all ages and abilities.  Up to six Coaches, four Assistant Coaches and 14 Support Staff volunteers will be needed to run the site until it closes – after which they will be able to enter the London Stadium and watch the rest of the game.
