GB Baseball Academy

View Map or Directions for the National Sports Training Centre, Heyford, off junction 10 of the M40, not far from Oxford.

The British Baseball Academy has been created to ensure that players with the appropriate levels of commitment have an opportunity to practice and improve their baseball skills:

– With players having similar commitment.
– With coaches who are following a plan of continuous development.
– In a programme which recognises each age-groups ability to learn different aspects of the game

The British Baseball Academy is about learning the game and giving players more chances to reach their potential. It is not about playing for Great Britain and attendance at the Academy provides no guarantee of selection to GB squads, although existing Great Britain players will be encouraged -- indeed expected -- to attend because it will give them the best opportunity to practice and improve. Similarly, Academy players may be invited by Head Coaches to practice with, and perhaps play for, the GB national teams.

The Academy runs through the “off-season” from October to March and Academy sessions take place once in each of those months, currently at the National Sports Training Center at Upper Heyford in Oxfordshire. To provide more opportunities for practice and improvement, Regional Academies have been introduced for the 2008/2009 Academy season. Regional Academies also take place once each month, in the South, the North and Scotland.

Beginning in 2008, the Academy season will culminate in an Academy Series, giving each Regional Academy the chance to kick off the season with high-level competition. The 2010 Academy Series will take place in Manchester on the weekend of March 27-28.

The British Baseball Academy is open to players from the ages of 10 to 18. Players are divided into age groups as determined by the Confederation of European Baseball (CEB). For the 2010/2011 Academy, the new age groupings are:

U12's:
For the 2010 and 2011 Academy season this group will be for players born in 1999, 2000 and 2001.
U15's:
For the 2010 and 2011 Academy season this group will be for players born in 1998, 1997 and 1996.
U18's:
For the 2010 and 2011 Academy season this group will be for players born in 1993, 1994 and 1995.

There is also an Under-25 “development” category for players born in or before 1992. For the 2010 and 2011 Academy season this group will be for players born in 1992 or before.

There is an annual fee of £50 to participate in the British Baseball Academy. This fee provides each member with an Academy T-shirt and cap and enables participation in all sessions that are offered. The Academy is non-profit, and all its coaches and administrators are volunteers. The Academy is supported financially by BaseballSoftballUK and Major League Baseball International.
