Liz Knight returns as BSUK Summer Coach in the North West Region
BSUK Summer Coach Liz Knight has recently returned to the UK to lend a hand with softball and baseball development in the North West Region – and was impressed to find that the first dedicated softball field in Manchester had been built since she was here last year.

Her main projects will involve delivering coaching sessions to school-aged groups, working with both rookie and experienced adult players and helping to raise the skills of local coaches. Liz said: “My main background is in single-sex competitive fastpitch in South Australia, but I have also played youth baseball and recreational slowpitch. I am passionate about all forms of the game and look forward to seeing continued improvement within the UK.”

Luis Arrevillagas, BSUK's Regional Development Manager for the North West, was impressed with the work that Liz carried out last year and asked her to come back for the summer of 2010. Luis said: “Liz's work was very professional: she adapted very quickly and build excellent relationships with established clubs. Her work in schools was outstanding and she was a pleasure to work with. I was very glad when she agreed to come back for the summer of 2010. It is reassuring to have someone who knows the area and knows what to expect and to know that the work will be professionally carried out.”

New Field

As for the new softball field at Parrs Wood High School in Didsbury, this was created through a £5000 grant accessed by the Manchester Softball League through BSUK's Small Facility Grants scheme. The inaugural game on the field will be played on Saturday, April 17 at the MSL ThirstBall Tournament.

Liz Knight had an opportunity to see the field shortly after her arrival in Manchester, and commented: “Im really pleased to see the diamond at Parrs Wood High School. For many players, it will provide their first chance to play on a dirt surface. The dirt basepaths will provide better traction when baserunning and provide a truer bounce to the ball, which will improve player confidence.”

Luis Arrevillagas said: “The Manchester Softball League worked hard for this and deserves the credit. They are a very well-run league, which enabled BSUK to award them the grant. The new field will increase the level of play in Manchester and increase satisfaction for the MSL players and teams.”
