Harlow Greensox set to add adult team to existing youth activity
Residents of Harlow in Essex, both young and old, will be glad to learn that they now have a great opportunity to play the game of baseball.

The Harlow Greensox youth baseball organisation has partnered with Herts Baseball Club and will promote its programme and the game of baseball this spring by becoming one of the venues for the 2009 Herts Spring League.

Baseball Facility

In May last year, young people in Harlow started to benefit from a £93,000 investment by Barclays Bank that has created a fantastic new baseball facility in the town.

The facility is the brainchild of volunteers from Harlow Neighbourhood Watch, who have been running baseball and cheerleading activities for youngsters in the community since 2005. It consists of a backstop fence and safety cages for players, a clay diamond and pitcher’s mound and an improved grass outfield.

The Neighbourhood Watch established the Greensox Baseball Initiative as a way of positively engaging with young people. Currently, the Greensox have approximately 100 members on their books ranging from 5 to 17 years of age, and the initiative is expected to grow further now that a proper facility is in place.

Adult Recruitment

Albert Hobdell, Head Coach of the Greensox and Chair of Harlow Neighbourhood Watch, said: “Before Groundwork and Barclays came to our assistance we were moving from here to there setting up practice sessions wherever we could. Now we are able to get down to recruitment and concentrating on this wonderful game.”

The Greensox are hoping to add an adult programme to their existing youth activities. Players of any standard, from complete beginners to players with previous baseball experience, are invited to contact the club. And they will get an immediate taste of the action with one of the Herts teams in their Spring League games that will be held in Harlow on Saturday, April 5.
